We did not speak much for the rest of the evening. Javed Khan settled himself before a hookah, puffing contentedly, blissfully unaware of the agitation he had set up in everyone’s minds. No one spoke. Khan-Begum went about with a long face, and sighed whenever she looked at me. Mother, too, sighed when she looked at me, and Anet and I stared at each other in bewilderment.

As we rose to go to our part of the house, Khan-Begum seized Mother’s hand, and in a choking voice, whispered, ‘Mariam, you are my mother. Do not help him to inflict greater torment on me than I have already suffered. Promise me that you won’t give your daughter to him.’

Mother replied, ‘Bibi, you have seen and heard everything that has happened. I am truly a dead one in the hands of the living. You distress yourself for nothing. If I have my way, he shall never get my consent. But will he wait for my consent?’

‘Allah bless you!’ exclaimed Khan-Begum. ‘Your daughter deserves a better fate than to play second fiddle in this family. I will pray that your wishes are granted.’
